Volney Roper Howard, 83, of McKenney, VA, passed away on Thursday, April 14, 2011. He was the son of Salome and Paul Howard.
Roper was a lifetime member of Mansons United Methodist Church, charter member of McKenney Hunt Club, and a founding member of Horseshoe Hunt Club. He was an avid turkey hunter, fisherman and semi-professional baseball player. Roper served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Virginia Starke Howard; a son, Paul C. Howard; a daughter, Sandy H. Mason and husband, Mike; granddaughter, Julie M. Howerton; great granddaughter, Lexi Vaughan Howerton; and a beloved person and like a daughter to the family, Dianne B. Fleming, all of McKenney. Roper is also survived by two sisters, Paula H. Bentley of DeWitt and Minna H. Fisher of Wilsons; a brother, Robert C. Howard and wife, Louise, of Highland Springs, VA; a niece and three nephews.
The family will receive friends 5 7 p.m., Sunday, at the Mansons United Methodist Church. The funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Monday, April 18, 2011, in Mansons Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery.
