Thelma Johnson Burnette, 82, of Emporia, VA, passed away on Monday, August 1, 2011, in Southern Virginia Regional Medical Center. She was born on November 8, 1928, in Blackstone, VA, a daughter of the late Herman L. Johnson, Sr. and Annie Connalley Johnson; she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, David Jackson Burnette, Sr.; sisters, Elizabeth J. Metzger and Annie J. Latta; and brother, Herman L. "Hick" Johnson, Jr.
After graduating with honors from Blackstone High School, Thelma attended RPI and later worked as a secretary for Reynolds Metals in Richmond, VA. After moving to Emporia, she served as the Clerk of the Emporia Municipal Court for several years. She was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church. Thelma had a great sense of humor and loved her family and friends.
She is survived by stepsons, David Jackson Burnette, Jr. of Richmond, Bruce H. of Leesburg, Steven H. and Mark A., both of Richmond and Joseph W. of Fredericksburg; nephews, James H. Johnson of Blackstone and Robert L. Johnson of Midlothian; brother-in-law, Roland E. Latta of Farmville; and six stepgrandchildren;
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 P.M., Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2011 at Echols Funeral Home, 806 Brunswick Ave., Emporia, VA.
A graveside celebration of Thelma's life will be held at 11 A.M., Wednesday, August 3, 2011, in Lakeview Cemetery, Blackstone, VA. Services locally by Joseph McMillian Funeral Home, 1826 Cox Rd., Bus. Hwy. 460, near Blackstone. Registry and condolences via www.mcmillianfuneralhome.com.
