Richard Hughes Hack Hackendahl, 87, of Blackstone, VA, formerly of Vinton, VA and Versailles, KY, passed away Wednesday, July 6, 2011.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Janice Hackendahl, daughter, Susan Nelson, and son, Steve Kelty.
Hack is survived by his daughter, Linda Ellington (Pete) of Blackstone, VA, son, Al Kelty (Ann) of Versailles, KY; two grandsons, Chris Ellington of Los Angeles, CA and A.J. Kelty (Kasi) of Versailles, KY; granddaughter, Leeann Hammond (Greg) of Plano, TX; four great-grandchildren.
He joined the US Marine Corps when he was 17 years old and served his country in action in Guadalcanal during World War II. He served with Lady Bird Johnson in the 1960s with her National Clean-Up/Fix-Up Campaign as the Director of National Paint Association in Washington, D.C.
A memorial service with military honors will be held 2 P.M., Sunday, July 17, 2011, at the Joseph McMillian Funeral Home, 1826 Cox Road (Bus. Hwy. 460) near Blackstone, VA 23824. The family will receive friends following the service.
