Phyllis Thompson Obituary

Phyllis Jean Fitzgerald Thompson, of Sneedville, Tennessee, formerly of Crewe Virginia, passed away August 29, 2024 at the age of 86. Phyllis was the daughter of John Nicholas Fitzgerald and Mary Irene Bennett Fitzgerald of Tipton, Oklahoma.  She married airman John W. (“Bill”) Thompson of Crewe, in 1955.  They lived in Altus, Oklahoma until he finished his service in the US Airforce.  They moved to Crewe in 1957 where she lived for 57 years.  She moved to Tennessee in 2014 to be near her only daughter.

Phyllis was a member of the Crewe Baptist Church where she served on various committees and was a member of the Women’s Missionary Union.  

She held various jobs during her life including driving a school bus for Kenston Forest School.  She worked at the A&P grocery store, Crewe Transfer, Gerson & Gerson, and R. E. Schodt & Sons in Crewe.  She also “managed the books” for her husband’s business, Bill’s Auto Service, and especially enjoyed her last job working at the Big Tee Family Restaurant in Crewe.

Phyllis loved cooking and often catered weddings and other special events in the community.  She bowled with the Friday Night Ladies league at Fort Pickett for many years and loved her many bowling friends.

Phyllis was predeceased in death by her parents and her loving husband.   She is survived by her daughter, Cheryl T. Batich (Mark), her sister, Margie Myers, and granddaughter Paulina Batich (Aaron Frederick).  She is also survived by a niece, Teresa Myers Moore, and nephews; Kirby G. Myers, Jackie F. Myers Jr., Barry F. Myers (Kare), Frank L. Fanshaw, Wyatt C. Watson (Elisa Bradshaw), Kenneth G. Thompson and 13 great-nieces/nephews.

The family expresses gratitude to the caregivers and staff of Hancock Manor Nursing Home in Sneedville, Tennessee and Regency Retirement Village in Morristown, Tennessee for the fellowship and loving care they provided during the last years of Phyllis’s life.   

The family will receive friends from 10:00 – 11:00 am on Monday September 9, 2024 at Crewe Baptist Church, Crewe, Virginia.   Funeral services will be held immediately following at 11:00am. Phyllis will be laid to rest with her husband in the Virginia Veterans Cemetery in Amelia, Virginia following the funeral service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Phyllis’s memory may be made to Crewe Baptist Church, 400 E. Virginia Avenue, Crewe, Virginia, 23930 or another preferred charity of your choice.
