Nancy Pierce Obituary

Obituary for Nancy Lee Saunders Pierce

Born March 31, 1943 - Died September 13, 2024

Nancy is survived by her loving husband, of 58 years, Willard Reed Pierce, Jr.; daughters, Charlyn Pierce and Daryle Pierce; grandchildren, Tyler Davis (Katelyn Knight) and Taylor Kelley (Brooks); great grandson, Cameron Kelley; brother, Dale Saunders (Nancy) and a host of nephews and nieces and cousins.

Nancy grew up in Amelia County.  She was very involved with her church and rural community.  She, her brother, and two cousins sang in a 4-H quartet all over Virginia.  Her love of music started at an early age.

Nancy and Willard met at the University of Richmond while both were singing in the choir.  Their first musical job was as choir director (Will) and organist (Nancy) at Mr. Vernon Baptist Church in Arlington, Virginia.

Music even followed them through Germany while Will was stationed there in 1968; they played and sang in a choir.

When given the career opportunity, the Pierce family moved to Burkeville, Virginia in 1973 to be closer to Amelia.  Again, Nancy was persuaded to become the organist at Blackstone Baptist Church by her aunt.  She remained the organist there for over 40 years.

Not only did Nancy love music, but her quest for knowledge was also unquenchable.  She received her first master’s degree in Reading from Longwood College and her second master’s from Catholic University in Library Sciences.  She became Nottoway County’s librarian and remained the librarian until she retired.

Nancy was preceded in death by her father, Roy Saunders, her mother, Inez Saunders and her brother, Robert Saunders.
