Nan Manson Obituary

Nan Smith Copley Manson, 88, a resident of The Hermitage, died Monday, April 27, 2009. She lived in Blackstone for 65 years. She was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, Joseph Lloyd Manson, Jr. and a sister, Mary Powell Copley.

Mrs. Manson is survived by her son, Joseph Lloyd Manson III of Alexandria; two daughters, Mary Virginia Manson of Richmond and Dr. Nancy Manson Coddington (Ian) of Manakin-Sabot; four grandchildren, Martha Stuart Manson, Joseph Scott Manson, Rachel Smith Manson and Elizabeth Claiborne Coddington; two brothers, Horace Otis Copley, Jr. (Charlotte) of Williamsburg and Waverly Emmett Copley (Mary Anne) of Amelia; and a sister, Nell Hurt Copley Irby of Richmond.

Mrs. Manson, former Miss Blackstone, was a graduate of Blackstone High School, Class of 1937, and Blackstone College for Girls of 1939. She was a member of Crenshaw United Methodist Church in Blackstone, for over 70 years, having served as Church Secretary for 25 years, sung alto in the choir for over 50 years, and member of the Ladies Bible Class. She was a loving mother, sister and grandmother to her family.

Graveside funeral services will be held 1 P.M. in Lakeview Cemetery followed by a memorial service at Crenshaw United Methodist Church at 2 P.M. on Saturday, May 2, 2009. You are welcome to pay respects at the Joseph McMillian Funeral Home, 1826 Cox Rd. (Hwy 460 Bus.) Blackstone, VA 23824.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Crenshaw United Methodist Church, Sanctuary Building Fund, 200 Church Street, Blackstone, VA 23824 or to the Employees Christmas Fund at The Hermitage in Richmond, 1600 Westwood Avenue, Richmond, VA 23227. The family wishes to thank the staff at The Hermitage for their loving and professional care of Mrs. Manson during her eight years as a resident.
