Judy Werner Obituary

Judy Lunsford Werner, 80, of Spout Spring, VA, departed this earth for Heaven on Thursday, January 9, 2025. She lived her life devoted to Christ, sharing her faith with all who crossed her path. Her legacy is one of love, service, and encouragement, touching the hearts of countless people throughout her life.

Born in Crewe, VA, Judy was the fifth of six daughters born to Mark and Annie Mae Lunsford. She spent most of her life in Crewe, where she was known for her vibrant faith and warm, loving spirit. Alongside two of her sisters, she sang in the Liberty Trio for many years, sharing her musical talents with others and bringing joy to those who heard them sing.

Judy's career journey began at the Crewe Chronicle, where she worked as a secretary. From there, she transitioned to the post dispensary at Fort Pickett in Blackstone, VA, where she served as a medical records secretary. It was at Fort Pickett that she met her husband, Art. Over the years, Judy also worked as a teacher at Grace Christian School and in various county offices in Nottoway. One of her most cherished roles, however, was providing in-home childcare for many years.

In the summer of 1992, Judy and her family moved to Spout Spring, VA, where she continued her work in ministry. She became part of the Donor Services team at Thomas Road Baptist Church, later transitioning to the Christian Community Service office at Liberty University. Her final role before retiring was with the Liberty Godparent Home in Lynchburg, VA. In every position she held, Judy was driven by a deep desire to serve others, always seeking ways to help and uplift those around her.

One of the most enduring legacies of Judy’s life was her heartfelt ministry through personally crafted greeting cards. Judy spent countless hours hand-drawing, crafting and coloring each card she sent to family and friends. Each card was more than just a note—it was a work of love, including a Scripture verse, a joke or quip, and always an encouraging word. In addition to the handmade cards, she would text a single Bible verse to her children, granddaughters and friends every night.  Through these simple but profound acts, Judy touched the lives of many and made an impact that will be felt for generations.

Judy is survived by her beloved husband of 56 years, Arthur L. Werner; her children, Marc Werner (Karla), Kirsten Gerringer (Mike), and Colin Werner; her grandchildren, Jarrid and Jaedyn Werner, Sarah and Ethan Gerringer, Sydney, Adrian, and Valerie Werner; her sisters, Eula Anderson, Janice Lewis, Betty Bowman (Don), and Carol Duff; her sister-in-law, Diane LaRose; her brothers-in-law, Eddie Werner (Melly), Tom Werner (Jean), and John Werner (Michelle); as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Judy is preceded in death by her parents, Mark and Annie Mae Lunsford and her sister, Vivian.

Judy’s life was a beautiful reflection of God’s love. She lived her faith, shared her joy, and served others with a heart full of grace. Though she will be deeply missed, her family and all who knew her can take comfort in knowing she is now in the presence of the Lord she so faithfully served.

“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6
