Joseph Mettauer Hurt Irby died April 10, 2007 at his home in Blackstone, VA. He was born September 5, 1934 in Blackstone, VA.
He was a 1955 graduate of Virginia Military Institute and upon graduation commissioned in the United States Army, serving in Berlin Germany as a Cavalry officer.
He was the past president of Irby Insurance Agency, past chairman of the board of Citizens Bank and Trust Co, past president of The Blackstone Industrial Development Authority. He was a member and former vestryman at St. Lukes Episcopal Church. He served as a director of the Mary Helen Coal Company. He was a former board member for the Nottoway Lunenburg Educational Foundation.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Ann Barnes Irby of Blackstone; his sister, Martha Irby Hunt of Charlottesville ,Va; his two children, Kelley Irby Osborn of Kenbridge and Joseph M. H. Irby II(LTC, USA, Ret) of Lexington VA.
Other survivors include step-children Dee Ann Bolter Barksdale of Blackstone, and David Wilson Bolter of Chester.
Joe leaves behind two grandchildren; Joseph M.H. Irby III and Margaret Lynn Irby and eight step grandchildren; Barney Bolter and Melinda Bolter, Jon Osborn, Marcy Osborn, Amanda Herring, Erica Barksdale, Megan Barksdale and Trey Barksdale.
Funeral services will be held at Lakeview Cemetery, Blackstone, Virginia on Thursday, April 12, 2007 at 2pm. Visitation with the family will be in St. Lukes Episcopal Church Parish Hall on Wednesday, April 11 from 6pm to 7:30pm.
