Jean Delores Elder Wells was born March 25th, 1942 in Darvills, Virginia to Lennie and Louise Elder. She passed away on July 13, 2026, at Dinwiddie Health and Rehabilitation Center. Jean spent her childhood on the family tobacco farm in Dinwiddie. She attended Sunnyside McKenney High School where she was an honor roll student and had perfect attendance. She was an outstanding member of the softball and basketball teams. Jean married young but loved her husband Rudolph dearly for the 58 years they had together. During most of her life, Jean was a farm wife but in later years she worked as a reading tutor at Sunnyside Elementary School. She raised her own two children as well as her grandchildren with a loving hand.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents, as well as her husband Rudolph Wells and her two brothers, Melvin Elder and Lennie Elder, Jr. She is survived by her children, Delores Wells and Michael Wells, granddaughters, Casey Kirkland (Cody) and Heather Wells, and one great granddaughter, Blake Kirkland. She is also survived by her brother, Larry Elder (Donna), sister-in-law, Aubrey Elder, and nephews and nieces.
Jean truly exemplified the words of Proverbs 31:26-28 “She opens her mouth with wisdom and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also.” She could be counted on to help any neighbor who needed a meal or a friendly visit. She never hesitated to step up when a call went out from someone in need.
The family will receive friends at the Joseph McMillian Funeral Home, 1826 Cox Rd., Blackstone, VA 23824, on Thursday July 16, 2026, from 6pm to 8pm. Funeral services will be held at Cut Banks Baptist Church, 24203 Cutbank Rd., McKenney, VA 23872 on Friday, July 17, 2026, at 11:00 AM, with burial to follow in the church cemetery.
