Jack Sandford, Jr Obituary

Jack Stewart Sandford, Jr. “Sandman” born and raised in Richmond, Virginia went to be with the Lord on Friday, April 26, 2024.  Sandy Jr. graduated from Varina High School in Henrico County, Virginia in 1976 and went on to attend Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia were earned his bachelor’s degree. 

Sandy served in the U.S. Army Special Forces National Guard for 25 years, he valued this service highly and attained the rank SFC-E7 earning many accommodations, and honorable achievements while serving his country as a Special Forces Green Beret.  Sandy Jr. retired in 1998 then used his experience and training moving on to work at Fort Lee Command Post in Virginia where he was employed for 15 years as an U.S. Army Instructor impacting many young soldiers during that time. In 2015 he transferred his work career taking him to Alton, Illinois where he worked at Wieland North America Worldwide Inc. as a Maintenance Supervisor for 10 years.

Sandy Jr. and his wife Cathy were married in Providence Forge, New Kent County, Virginia and were married for 11 years.  Sandy loved his family and friends and gave to many people, his time and his heart which was as big as his smile. He honored and respected the military especially the falling soldiers at the Christmas season he and his wife Cathy would go to cemeteries and place Christmas wreaths on each soldiers’ gravestone, which he instilled in his children, and they too carry on that tradition today.   

Sandy, Jr. is survived by his wife, Cathy Sue who he dearly loved, protected, and cared for, she was his gal and there protecting and caring for him at the end of his long battle of cancer.  He leaves behind His daughters, Tiffany “Sissy” Dunlow, husband Dylan, Dakota “Leigh” Sandford, and Regina K. Cumo, husband Nathan and his son Justin Sandford.  Sandy cherished and loved each one of his children, especially his grandchildren, Ian, Noelle, Paisley, Bentley, Asher, and his little Emiline, his mother Frankie Sandford, sister Susan her husband Walt and brothers Bobby Sandford his wife, Kathleen. Sandy was predeceased by his beloved father Jack S. Sandford, Sr. and brother Chuck Sandford, wife Georgeanne, living.

Sandy Jr. was an ordained minister, he and his wife attended Providence Forge Presbyterian Church, in Virginia and Paradise Baptist Church in Jerseyville, Illinois for many years. Sandy, Jr. had a passion for bull riding, he and his wife Cathy traveled many years together packing up his gear and going state to state with the WSPBR Christian Group living out his dream and taking home 1st place prizes for most of the rides.  Recently while fighting cancer at the age of 66 Sandy went on to place 6th in the World Senior Professional Bull Riders division.

Funeral service with Military Honors will be held Thursday, May 23, 2024, at 3:00p.m. at the Virginia Veterans Cemetery at Amelia, 1300 Pridesville Road, Amelia Va 23002.  Arrangements were made by the Joseph McMillian Funeral Home in Blackstone, Virginia.
