H. Lee Gilliland, 74, of Bracey, formerly of Nottoway County, VA, passed away at his home on Monday, February 6, 2012.
He is survived by his wife, Gloria S. Gilliland; children, Ronald W. Gilliland (Sherry) of Crewe, Patricia G. Allen (Doug) of Crewe; step-children, Richard A. Vaughan, Jr. (LaVonne) of Lakeland, FL, David M. Vaughan (Jackie) of Crewe; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his brothers, Jerry L. Gilliland of Crewe, Kenneth W. Gilliland of Georgia and Bill Gilliland of South Hill; sisters, Cassie Moore of Victoria, Barbara Rickman of Burkeville and Betty Rickman of Burkeville; many beloved nephews and nieces, especially David L. Strum of Crewe and Kimberly D. Queen of Crewe. Lee was preceded in death by a brother, Robert E. Gilliland.
He was a barber at an early age along with his father, and he also worked on the railroad. Lee later joined the US Navy serving on the USS Intrepid as a fireman and barber. After service, he became a deputy sheriff for Nottoway County and was a volunteer for many years with the Nottoway County Emergency Squad. Lee started his own barbershop, The Hair Place, in Crewe and then became a long distance truck driver for Overnite Transportation. Upon retiring, he worked with his brother at Sanitary Barbershop in Blackstone until present. Known as The Joker and The Mongoose Man by many of his patrons, Lee loved to make people laugh and enjoy life.
The family will receive friends 6 8 p.m., Thursday, at the Joseph McMillian Funeral Home, 1826 Cox Road (Bus. Hwy. 460), near Blackstone. Graveside funeral services will be held 1 p.m., Friday, February 10, 2012, with military honors in Crewe Cemetery.
