George S. Cummins, 85, of Blackstone, Virginia, died Monday, November 5, 2007. He was born in Providence, Rhode Island, the son of the late A.B. Cummins of Blackstone.
George was a member of the U.S. Marine Corps., 1940 - 1944, seeing service for twenty-six months in the South Pacific at Samoa, New Guinea, Australia, and Guadalcanal with the First Marine Division.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Florence Fahrbach Cummins; two sons, Charles B. Cummins of Belleville, Illinois and Deane L. Cummins of Vinton, Virginia; a grandson, George Douglas Cummins of Roanoke; two nieces, Kim Carmean of Hastings, Minnesota and Dr. Kelli Carmean of Lexington, Kentucky.
George was a graduate of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, B.A., 1949 and Washington & Lee University Law School, L.L.B., 1951. He served as Kemper Insurance Staff Adjuster, Richmond-Charlottesville, VA, 1951-1953, entering private Law Practice, Blackstone, September 1953, being admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court, June 6, 1966.
He served as Nottoway County Chairman of the American Red Cross, member and Elder of the Blackstone Presbyterian Church and served as the Adult Bible Class teacher for over 25 years. He was a Partner of Southside Finance Company, Blackstone, 1962 to 1993, with his cousin, the late M.E. Inge, Jr.
George served as Commonwealth Attorney, Nottoway County Virginia, Feb. 1966 to Dec. 1979, serving thereafter for a period as Special Prosecutor in the 11th Judicial Circuit by court appointment. He was appointed a member and secretary of the Virginia State Bar Discipline Committee-Fourth District, 1986-1989. George was appointed by Governor Wilder as Nottoway County Escheator, serving for the term July 1, 1990 to 1994. He also served as Chairman, Nottoway County School Board Selection Commission from 1988 to 2000.
A celebration of his life and memorial service will be held at 11 A. M., Friday, November 9, 2007 at the Blackstone Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Peter C. Smith, officiating. Private interment. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 P.M., Thursday, at the Joseph McMillian Funeral Home, 1826 Cox Rd., Hwy. 460, Blackstone.
