Geneva Nelson Bowman, Age 97, of Nottoway County passed away on March 12, 2025. Geneva was born on March 23, 1927, to her mother and father, Ennette Daniel Nelson and Otis H. Nelson. Geneva’s mother died when she was only two years old, and she went to live with her paternal grandparents Hillard and Minnie Nelson and her Aunt Estelle Nelson in Charlotte County. Geneva graduated from Randolph Henry High School in Charlotte County and studied at Southside Community Hospital School of Nursing. She worked as a practical nurse at the hospital until she married her husband, Joe C. Bowman. They were married 49 years and reared their four sons on the family farm in Nottoway County. Her family was blessed by her as a loving wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and great grandmother who was always loving and ready to assist her family and friends in any way she could. She was a member of St. Marks United Methodist Church and was active there for many years. In addition she is remembered by her family and friends for her warm hospitality and delicious food.
Geneva is predeceased by her parents and grandparents and her husband, Joe C. Bowman, and her son, Clyde Wayne Bowman.
She is survived by her three sons and their wives, Robert Nelson Bowman (Carolyn), Daniel Hill Bowman (Julie), and Thomas Ashley Bowman (Patsy) and by her four grandchildren, Anne Bowman Goldberg (Ted), Jonathan Parrish Bowman (Betsy), Angel Bowman Rhoten (Wil), and Charles Ross Bowman. She is also survived by seven great grandchildren, Colby Beckett Goldberg, Austin James Bowman, Aubrey Elizabeth Bowman and Annabelle Ruth Bowman; Elizabeth Bailey Rhoten, Emerson Cole Rhoten, Ian Joseph Rhoten and by step-grandchildren, Brandi Newcomb Warren and Christopher Newcomb (Megan).
The family gives their special thanks to her caregivers over the years, Cindy Sadler and Faye King, and most recently the staff of Hickory Hill Retirement Community.
The family will receive visitors at Joseph McMillian Funeral Home, 1826 Cox Road Blackstone VA, on Friday March 14, 2025, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be Saturday March 15, 2025 at 2 p.m. at St. Marks United Methodist Church, 7221 Hungarytown Road, Crewe VA.
