Gary Robert Taggart, 82, of Blackstone, VA, passed away on Wednesday, December 20, 2023, at his home surrounded by his family.
Gary was born in Tyler Hill, Pennsylvania, where he learned how to play the guitar and sing at an early age. Gary’s talent for playing music was innate, he never learned how to read musical notes, he learned and played by ear. He started the first rock band in Southside Virginia called The Tempests and went on playing music with bands such as: The Shados-M, Southern Fantasy, and South Bound.
Gary was “the voice” of Blackstone for 26 years for WKLV-WBBC radio station in Blackstone. He loved connecting with the public by sharing the music he loved his whole life with them on the radio.
Gary’s love and passion for music were great, but it could not compare to his love for his family. Left behind to cherish his memory are his wife of 62 years, Shelby Crews Taggart; son, Barry Taggart (Paola); daughter, Shaun Seamster (Jason); granddaughter, Kayli Taggart; grandson, Tate Seamster; and a special four-legged baby, Pepper.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Mary and Earl Taggart; and two sisters, Barbara Taggart and Meryl Cesarini.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 pm., Wednesday, December 27, 2023, at the Joseph McMillian Funeral Home, 1826 Cox Rd., Blackstone, VA., 23824. Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M. Thursday, December 28, 2023, at the funeral home with interment to follow in Lakeview Cemetery in Blackstone.
