Frank Elgin Houseman, 77, of Blackstone, Virginia, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, October 31, 2025.
Born in Niagara Falls, New York, Frank proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1967 to 1969. Following his service, he attended Forestry School in Lake City, Florida, beginning a lifelong connection to the natural world. His career as a forester with the Virginia Department of Forestry brought him to Southside Virginia, where he met the love of his life, Bettie Bradshaw Houseman. They were married for 52 wonderful years.
Frank and Bettie made their home in Blackstone, where he served as co-owner and manager of Nottoway Lumber Company until his retirement. Known for his strong work ethic, steady presence, and quiet kindness, Frank was respected by all who knew him.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Bettie Bradshaw Houseman; two loving daughters, Jennifer Houseman Beck (Tim) and Marcia Houseman Martin (Dan); and four cherished grandchildren, Danny Martin, Colby Martin, Carsten Beck, and Ava Beck, who brought immense joy to his life. He is also survived by his sister, Susan Argentieri of Greenville, South Carolina, and a niece, Amy Willingham. Frank was predeceased by his parents, Nelson and Elizabeth Houseman and sister, Mary Lou Houseman.
The family extends heartfelt appreciation to two special caregivers, Mary Legrand and Tanya Clayton, for their compassionate care and support, and the Hospice Care Team at Amedysis.
Family and friends are invited to visit on Monday, November 3rd, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Joseph McMillian Funeral Home, 1826 Cox Road in Blackstone, Virginia. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, November 4th, at 3:00 p.m. Crenshaw United Methodist Church, 200 Church Street, Blackstone, Virginia 23824. Interment will follow in Lakeview Cemetery, Blackstone with military honors.
