Essie Smith Byrd

Essie Smith Byrd, 82, of Henderson, NC, formerly of McKenney, VA, passed away Tuesday, April 26, 2011.

She loved her family and shared many special memories. Essie is preceded in death by her husband, Harry Flood Byrd; her three sisters, Annie Williams, Eva Cairnes, and Gertrude Townsend, and a brother, Clifton Vaughan.

She is survived by her five daughters, Judy Stallings (Charles, Jr.) of Blackstone, VA; Janet Carden (Carl) of Spring Grove, VA; Frances Keeton (Hartwell) of Henderson, NC; Cheryl Harris (Jerry) of McKenney, VA; and Meryl Harris (Johnny) of McKenney, VA; ten grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and special family member and niece, Lorraine Grant, of Alberta, VA.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 P.M., Thursday, at the Mansons United Methodist Church, 17211 Mansons Church Road, McKenney, VA. Funeral services will be held 11 A.M., Friday, April 29, 2011, in Mansons Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Mansons United Methodist Church, c/o Mildred Spiers, 19516 Depot Road, McKenney, VA 23872.
