Doris Abernathy Obituary

Doris Major Abernathy, 92, of Burkeville, VA, passed away on Monday, August 18, 2025.  She loved to entertain and cook for family and friends. Doris was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Wilson Abernathy, parents, Ella Myrtle Rody Bates and Charles Edward Major, sons, Joseph Wilson Abernathy, Jr. and Donald Abernathy, three grandchildren, Lucas John Abernathy, Tatum Abernathy and Kaylee Johnson. Doris is survived by daughter, Diana Lynn Slate, daughter-in-law Debbie Abernathy, five grandchildren, Donald D. Abernathy, Jr. (Kim), Nathan Slate (Liz), Allison Maddox (Morgan), Nikole Jenkins and Joseph W. Abernathy III, Trey (Tiffany); great grandchildren, Trey, Nicholas, Katlyn, Samantha, Jason, Ryan, Trinity, Lexi. TC, Chloe, Rosalynn, Joe and Kolbie; a great great grandchild, Kaiden and sisters, Hazel Nelson (Bob) and Alice Freeman.

Family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, from 5-7 PM at the Blackstone Chapel of the Joseph McMillian Funeral Home, 1826 Cox Rd., Blackstone, VA 23824. Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, August 21, 2025, at 11 AM at the Blackstone Chapel of the Joseph McMillian Funeral Home. Interment will be at Wards Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery, 7818 Namozine Rd., Crewe, VA 23930.
