Claude H. Winn, age 87, of Wilsons, VA, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, March 27, 2011.
He was a lifelong member of White Oak United Methodist Church and a WW II Veteran of the U.S. Navy. On D-Day he piloted a Landing Craft Vehicle at Omaha Beach providing rocket and smoke cover for the Allied Forces. He served on the Lacerta in the Pacific Theatre, providing support for the Okinawa invasion amidst horrific Kamikaze attacks. Claude loved his family, gardening, church, and telling family stories. He was preceded in death by his father, Samuel Edward Winn; his mother, Mary Evelyn Prosise Winn; his wife, Billie Craig Springston Winn; two sons, Claude Jr. "Buddy Winn, Samuel Craig Winn; and a grandson, Sammy Winn, Jr. He was the last of the 19 children of Samuel Winn.
Claude is survived by a daughter, Jean Patricia Rose (Steve) of Fairfax and a son, Terry Winn (Brenda) of Colorado Springs, CO; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Robin Winn Adcock of Ford, VA and a brother-in-law, Wendell Springston (Lynn) of Yorktown, VA.
The family will receive friends 6:30 8:30 P.M., Tuesday, at the Joseph McMillian Funeral Home, 1826 Cox Road (Bus. Hwy. 460) near Blackstone. Chapel funeral services will be held 1 P.M., Wednesday, March 30, 2011 at the funeral home with burial to follow in Lakeview Cemetery.
