Charlie Philip Wilborn, 86, passed away peacefully in his sleep at Southside Community Hospital, in Farmville, VA, on Tuesday, May 14, 2024. He had a brief illness and spent time in Heritage Hall-Blackstone for rehabilitation. He had recovered well and planned to return home before falling ill on the 12th of May. His family rallied around him, but his heart gave out as his granddaughter, Hannah, was at his bedside. Charlie had a remarkable memory, a soft chuckle loved by his entire family and was fondly called “Dadaw”. He was the sixth son born to Rose Mae (Arendall) and Thomas Hausen Wilborn on December 5, 1937, in Black Walnut, Halifax County, Virginia. He spent his childhood in the Halifax County area and moved to Richmond on his sixteenth birthday. There he met his wife, Anita Janes, with whom he had four children.
Charlie was a painting contractor for 60 years. He was a quiet and private man, who taught himself to play the guitar, banjo and the piano. There were few instruments he could not play with only minutes of instruction. He loved classic automobiles and could name the make, model and year of every vehicle he saw. He especially loved ’67 and ’68 Pontiac Firebirds and ensured each child had their own by their sixteenth birthdays. He also loved a red pickup.
He coached girls’ softball, along with his wife, for the Blackstone Rec. Association for thirteen years and enjoyed many evenings at Miller Field. He also coached baseball, lead boy scouts and helped take Anita’s girl scout troops on camping trips. He enjoyed camping with his family, taking long Sunday drives, teaching his children and wife how to drive and how to ride a horse. He made certain to spend quality time with each child and loved riding with them on his motorcycles.
Charlie was predeceased by his wife, Anita Janes Wilborn, his parents, his stepmother, Mary and ten of his siblings. He is survived by three sisters, Wanda Jarrett(Henry), Frances Beck(Letcher) and Nancy Smith(James) , his daughters, Andrea “Angel” Grissom (Michael), Alison Wilborn, and Amber Cromer (Thomas “Bones”), his son, Jason Wilborn, Sr., his grandchildren, Tyler Summers Nicklyn (Brian), Courtenay Summers, Brian Perkins (Emily), Jason Wilborn, Jr. (Taylor), Jordan Byers (Bridgette), Hannah Wilborn, Haley Byers Grimm (Charles) and Andrea Waltrip, his great granddaughters, Capri, Ava and Ivey Byers and Kaylee Perkins. He is also survived by his son-in-law, Terry Summers (Donna) and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his foster daughter, Debbie Farrar Benson, and survived by his foster grandchildren, Cheryl “Cherie” Ann Benson, Donnie O Benson, III, and David Benson, his great granddaughter, Kaila Tucker and their respective families.
A private interment will occur in Lakeview Cemetery in Blackstone, where his ashes will be laid at the feet of his beloved wife. The family would like to thank the staff of Heritage Hall, Southside Community Hospital and especially, Joseph McMillian Funeral Homes. www.mcmillianfuneralhome.com
