Barbara Smith Buchanan

Barbara Smith Buchanan, passed peacefully on Monday, May 19, 2025.  She was born on December 31, 1940, in Farmville, Virginia to the late Lillie and Benjamin Smith.  Barbara married James Bryant Buchanan, June 28, 1986.  She was preceded in death by her sister, Jean Lindsey, and her brother, Benjamin Prestley Smith, Jr.  She is survived by her devoted and dedicated husband, James Bryant “Buck” Buchanan and his children, Melissa Smith, Patricia Foster (Terry), James Warren “J.W.” Buchanan (Robin); their grandchildren, Taylor, Katie, Tara, Sara and Bryant; great grandchildren, Tucker, Isaac, Isaiah and Camerie.  She is also survived by her niece, Diane Postman (Eric); great nephews, Zachary Postman (Nathalie) and Nathan Postman (Kelsey); and her great-great niece, Cecilia Postman.

  Barbara was employed at the ABC Board of Virginia.  She was a devoted member of Chesterfield Baptist Church in Moseley, VA.  She and Bryant enjoyed eating out and taking short trips.  Barbara was known by friends and family for her quick wit and laughter.  No one was a stranger around Barbara, she loved life and loved people.  She gave not only to her beloved church but to many worthy charities.  Her family wishes to express their gratitude for all their love, support and prayers during this difficult time.
